I caught a worm!

A couple of weeks ago, Ashton and Marisa were in the backyard playing. Ashton starts saying, "I caught a worm!! Look Marisa do you want to touch it?" Marisa says, "No! I do NOT want to touch it!" I go out to see what they are up to. Oh, it's not a worm, its a snake! I tell him, That's gross! "Wow, A Snake!" Darin is all excited about the fact that his son caught his first snake. Like that implies he will be catching more in the future.

He played with it for a nice long time. Darin took pictures (Which I don't have developed yet). It was a baby gopher snake, so don't worry. Eventually Ashton had it in a cup and he dropped it on the deck and it ran for it's life slithered away between the crack. He didn't kill it for all his trying, but apparently he did lick it!!!! That is just....EWWWWW! I kept my eyes open for any weirdness - like him getting ecloi or whatever, and he seems to be fine. Like I said it has been a couple of weeks. Darin was so oddly proud of Ashton, like it proved he was on his way to becoming a man or something. Ugh! Men... :)

First Day of Kindergarten

I finally have a kid in school! Some times it blows my mind because I remember kindergarten. Violet's first day was Wednesday. Her school is strange and has an early out day on Wednesday. Luckily I have arranged a car pool so I only have to go to the school once a day, instead of two and the other moms also only go once instead of 3 times. Rotten half day kindy!

Violet was so excited she could hardly sleep the night before. And then she woke up early. She really likes her teacher, and the fact that there are about 7 kids from the ward in her class. A lot of the stuff they are doing in class now, she already knows, but is still having fun. I think her favorite thing is that they get to play with play doh everyday.

Violet is also experiencing another first. Her first loose tooth. I was worried because her adult tooth had already begun to come up behind the baby tooth. I was thinking we were going to have to get her baby teeth pulled, but it looks like we will not after all! Hooray!!!! So she has a wiggly tooth. She thinks it is cool. We have a little pillow that Elaine received int he hospital that has a small pocket to put your tooth in for the tooth fairy. Vi can't wait to use it! I was thinking the other day that Elaine should be in 2nd grade. How fun. Miss you!
ps- sorry the one picture has a shadow all over her face! I was in a hurry!

Check Up

Ashton is three, and that still blows my mind. His check up was quick. Here are his stats...
Weight: 35 lbs (83%tile)
Height: 36" (17%tile)
So basically he is short and fat healthy. Big surprise. Now all we need is for him to get interested in the toilet.

Knighton Fmaily Reunion

We had a fun time visiting with extended family a few weeks ago. We were the only ones there from our side of the Knighton Family. The kids had a blast playing all of the fun games. Ashton's favorite was the marble race. I think Vi had fun with the donut eating and anything that involved her getting candy.

There was an amazing family scrabble quilt that Aunt Nelva and her daughter Janet put together. I never did locate my name (it was packed with them!) but saw most everyone else's! It was an amazing sight! Here is a picture of a different one. Ours was much bigger to accommodate all the names. Thanks for the fun time everyone!

Uh Oh!!!

Darin cuts his own hair. Apparently things went awry last night. All I have to say is OOOOOPPSY!

I feel bad that I just stared at him and laughed.

He wanted to make sure everyone noticed the huge shine off his head. He's starting to "thin" on the top.

You ever just have one of those days where you swear no one else on the planet has a brain? Ugh! So, I know that is is common practice to check your order when you go through the drive through. Everyone has been stuck missing, drinks, sandwiches, or the least of our worries, napkins and straws. Last week was pretty bad when one of our glasses was full of not soda, but water....weird. But, on to bigger and better stories.

I had a roll of film that needed developing ( I know, we live in the dark ages) so I took it with me to Costco. Drop it off. Do my shopping, come back in an hour and big surprise, it's not ready. I had somewhere I needed to go so I decided to come back the next day since I was going to be in the town anyway for something else. Not too big of a deal. So, the next day I run my errands (voluntarily inflicting pain on myself AKA my 3rd Hep B shot...ow) and run back over to Costco for the film. Yes, they have it, I get it, make sure it has the cd (because I've been stiffed in the past) and head out of there. We got lunch and went to my friends house to eat. Get looking at my pictures and...crap! They only gave me one set and I paid for two.

By this point my kids are beyond fed up with errands. Each time loading and unloading them is a milestone because I have the double stroller and it has to be taken out to maneuver children. Ashton is throwing a tantrum all the way in to Costco and while we are there. All the lady has to say is...."mistakes happen." How about an I'm sorry you had to spend basically 3 trips to the store (I live 30 minutes away...imagine the gas $$ that was wasted) for one dang roll of film. All I want are my pictures! Sheesh! She wouldn't even look me in the eye. I did get my pictures and had to literally drag Ashton back to the van and wrestle him in. The pictures are fine. I'll post some when I get a little rest. Going anywhere with kids is a lot of work. And extra places just ads to the fun.

It just made me feel like I have to double check every little thing that other people do, to make sure I am getting what I am supposed to. Why is it that we can't rely on anyone to actually do their job, or understand what is going on? I know everyone makes mistakes, but really.....does it have to be over every little thing?

Part of the reason this was so frustrating is because of what happened with Vi's class. I went the day I was told to find out what class she was in etc. I signed her up for her assessment with the teacher and did everything I was supposed to. I even got a car pool arranged with some others in her class so I will only have to drive once a day. Nice! Then on Saturday she gets a letter in the mail from the other kindergarten teacher saying that she is in her class, at the opposite time of day! What?!?!

I finally get a hold of someone at the elementary school who knows what is going on and what happened you ask. There is another Violet in Kindergarten and they told me all the WRONG information. Nice. It wouldn't have been a big deal except I already had things all worked out. it is frustrating that people cannot be bothered to read the first and last name when giving out important information. Then the people at the school make a big deal like I want her to be in the class with her friend yadda yadda, which is not the point. They talked to both teachers and made me decide what to do. I decided to make it easy on myself and put her in the class I was told originally she was in so I didn't have to change appointments and carpools. I sure now the school people think poorly of me, but oh well!

So Vi will be in school while I am at volleyball on Tues, Thurs and Fri. I'll have to make the most of my time on Mondays and Wednesdays when Myra will be napping and it will just be me and Ashton! It's weird because they have early out day on Wednesday. Middle of the week. So convenient.

The moral of the story is if people could just try (maybe a little harder even) to do their job, it wouldn't be so much work for the rest of us. I know there are intelligent people out there, right?!

Happt Birthday, Ashton!!!!

Gandma Crook and Ashton
Ashton 1 day old

My little boy is three!!!! He is such a fun kid. We had a little party yesterday and although the games were lost on the kids, I think they enjoyed themselves. He played with his rockets from Uncle Ray for hours. They were a hit. He has taken equal amounts of time playing with the others. Thanks everyone!

He had a Rockin' Rocket Birthday cake. I'm rather proud of how it turned out. Thanks for the pan, Deann!! I'll post a picture when I get it.

Ashton is still a mommas boy, and I love it. He is a sweet boy. Happy Birthday Handsome!

Oh Happy Day!!!

Yesterday was an unexpectedly exciting day around here. I got a phone call in the morning informing me that Intermountain Healing Hearts was APPROVED to be a non profit 501 (c)3 organization. All donations are now TAX DEDUCTIBLE. If any one has a business or would like to donate, it is now a write off! This status make things a bit easier for the group. I big CONGRATS and THANK YOU to the members who worked so very hard for this achievement. I must say I am proud that they were able to accomplish this without the assistance or fee of a lawyer!! Way to Go!!! Hip Hip, Hooray!!!!

Then, later in the afternoon Darin called me to let me know that HE GOT HIRED ON!!!! He has been working as a private contractor since January. He got hired on so this entails a raise, paid vacation/holidays/sick days and better insurance. This was long over due, but sooo nice that it finally happened! I feel like we **might** be able to get on top of some things now, and maybe (dare I say it) finish our bathroom and fence. One can only hope! Good work Darin!!!

Iron Man

We had a nice evening for our anniversary. Darin arrived home from work and surprised me with none other than red roses and chocolates. He even got a nice card. How thoughtful! I'm so lucky. :)

We dropped our kids off at a sitters and went for dinner at The Olive Garden. The food was good. I hadn't been there for a while, the menu seems to have changed. It was nice to take our time and eat, just the two of us. Then we ran a couple of errands and lastly headed to the movies. We saw IronMan. It was good. I was pleasantly surprised. The special effects were amazing and the plot believable, as far as sci-fi goes. Another nicely done Marvel Comic movie. I loved the end! The theater was fairly full for a late Tuesday Night. I could have done without the obnoxious girl sitting behind us who had a loud comment/opinion on everything. She acted like she was an expert or something.

Happy Birthday Renee!

I know this is a day late, forgive me! Just wanted to say Happy Birthday to the best sister in law ever. Renee, you are a great addition to the family. You have been such a blessing to us all. My kids are always so excited to visit with you and play. Thank you for your many talents that you graciously share with others.

It is heart warming to see how much you and Josh adore each other. I think you were made for each other. I hope your birthday was one to remember! We love you very much!

Melissa & Fam

Happy Anniversary!!

Today is our 8 year anniversary. In some ways I feel we have always been married, and in some it seems strange to have been so long.

We have been through a lot of fabulous things. He have our 4 lovely children. Thank you for that, Darin. You are such a great father. The kids love playing with you and learning from you. Violet especially has benefited from your art lessons. Ashton loves playing ball with you already. Thank you for honoring your priesthood. What a great example for our children.

We have also been through the most difficult of times, but are still together to talk about them. I'm glad we have each other to rely on when we need.

Your many talents always put me to shame, but I am so lucky to have you. Thank you for loving me so much, Weetie Wuv! For dancing with me and kissing me. I love you Darin! Here's to eternity!
I wish I had wedding pictures to share, but they are not in a digital format...

A Slow Death

I think that is what is happening to our van. It is dieing.....very slowly. I know this happens with vehicles, but it sure it a pain. So, it has a ll the little problems you would expect in a 7 year old car. We've had tire stuff and whatnot. During the past month or so, things have just been falling apart. The Check engine light has been on for quite some time. I took the van it, and there is a sensor that need replacing. Not actually a vital part for the engine to run....just a sensor. Then also about a year ago (I've written about this quirk before) the cd payer stopped working. Not so bad, as long as you don't drive anywhere without radio reception. We have had boring drives through Nevada to be sure!

Once in a while the drivers side window wont roll back up. It always scares me, but so far (knock on wood) it has gone back up within a few minutes. I dread the day it truly doesn't rise and I have to drive around with black tarp taped to my van. Ugh! On one of our trips to Cali, the airbag light came on. I made an appointment to take it in to the shop and that day, the light went off. The next time I got in the car for a long (er) trip ( I think it was to ID this time), it amazingly was on once again. GRRRRRR. I also discovered that the tube that carries the fluid to the windshield for cleaning, is broken so I cannot use that feature. The newest ailment is the gas gage. It no longer works. My van is "full" for about the first 100 miles. If that were really true it would be a miracle! I haven't been willing to try and simply keep track of how many miles I've driven on that tank. That also means that I have to fill my van up each time or run the risk of running out of gas. The Joys!
PS - Violet has been drawing a lot of Fairies! Good Job!

Help Mercydez

This is a cutie patootie in our group. Her Aunt (I believe) is organizing this for her. Thought I'd spread the word.

Fire and Water

It has been an eventful weekend to say the least. We had a big fire not miles from our home on Friday night. It was caused by a downed power line. Our church building was used as a temporary shelter by the American Red Cross. Many members of our stake were evacuated for the night. We were at our friend's the Marvels, so we missed most of the action. When we got home late, the mountain was still glowing. I am glad we still had a place to come home to.

the next morning I went to Yuba Lake with some of the youth in the ward. It was a Bishops challenge for the youth to read the Book of Mormon and he would take them boating. It was my first time on a small boat. It was great! It was overcast so it wasn't too uncomfortable. I tried water skiing. I am sore, but I got up briefly a couple of times. They say because it was so windy, it made the water rough and hard to learn in. Yeah, that's it! :) It was fun. They lake was beautiful. Much larger than I expected. I loved looking at the clouds and feeling the wind in my face! The sand was pretty nice. Fine, not many rocks. I even got to play a little Frisbee!

Energizer Mode

That's what I feeling like I've been doing. I just keep on going, and going and going.....
This week, and especially the last few days through this weekend have been jam packed. I feel like I've been neglecting my kids. They had a sitter yesterday and will have one this afternoon again. What with Young women's and youth activities, IHH events, visiting people at the hospital, funerals, school registrations....holy cow. I even had to cut out a couple of things when times overlapped. How can I be expected to be doing all these things! AGHHHHHH!

I know that next week should be much more mellow. I still have an enrichment activity and an Elder's quorum BBQ, Family Reunion, plus some other things, but I am not quite as full to the gills as they are spread out throughout the week.

I am not prepared for Ashton's upcoming B-day. Or our anniversary. Crazyness!
