Elaine and Handen

So I got a facebook message the other day from my BFF Deann.  This is what it said: "So last night Handen, Judy and I watched Bridge to Terabithia, at the part where the friend passes away...he completely lost it!!! At first he wouldn't talk about it, Judy asked me what I thought was wrong, and I responded that he was probably remembering. SHe asked if he was remembering Elaine, I said I think so.....he lost it a little more! He actually ended up sleeping by me, he did start to talk to me (eventually) and he said "I remember her mom like it was yesterday..the stuff we did....she was my best friend" at which point my waterworks turned on fulll bore! He ended up crying himself to sleep! Anyways....I told him that you would be so touched that he does remember (even if at times he acts otherwise)."
(Elaine is on the left - a puppy and Handen is in the stroller - cookie monster)
Here are some pictures of them together.  My favorite are of Elaine force feeding Handen a sucker.  They did everything together.  They drew chalk lines together, and got into trouble with leap pads...  They would also fight over who got to pet baby Vi when she was outside in her johnny jump up.  They would push Vi around like it was a swing.  Handen is 6 months younger than Elaine.  He was too little to be allowed in the hospital.  After she died he hated me and Darin.  He refused to come to our apartment because we had taken his friend away.  It was so sad to see a little 2 1/2 year old mourn and try to understand.  For a long time, a couple years he would ask his mom to take him to the cemetery to leave stuff for her there.  Now he is almost 11.  He is a typical boy.  I figured that by now he had all but forgotten her.  He was so little.  I know we tease him a lot (out of love I swear!) and he has heard stories about her and seen pictures and home movies, but he does remember.  Poor kid has been traumatized like the rest of us, only we really didn't realize until now, eight and a half years later.  We all love and miss you Elaine!

Interesting Vanity Plates

Whilst traveling through New York State, I say several, lets say interesting, vanity license plates.  One that was on a sports car read "NOTWIMPY".  Yes, we know you are compensating!  Don't try to deny it.

Another read "IAMPRINCE".  Like of a country, or the musician?  It was at a Wal - Mart in Canandaigua. Totally where a prince shops.

The third completely random plate was on an SUV or minivan - I can't recall.  The plate read "JESUSVIP".  While I do concur with the statement.....it's a little strange for a plate on a car.  A bumper sticker just doesn't cut it I guess.....

I have not been great about blogging.  Blogger changed their format and it still weirds me out and I don't know where things are.  Grrr.  Vaughn is two.  Maybe sometime will will post pictures from his birthday.

It is the fourth of July.  I love this holiday.  I have very fun memories of singing patriotic songs at the top of my lungs, many times during my childhood.  Some of you remember, you were there.....  But besides the music, I thought it would be fun to write about movies that remind me of the fourth.  I remember posting something similar to this for Christmas.  It was quite fun and I enjoyed hearing other's ideas.

Disney's Pollyanna is a big one for me.  There is the fun carnival during the movie where you see a softer side of the cranky lady and she makes sure Pollyanna gets her doll, and I love the song/skit with Hayley mills singing America the beautiful.

Another childhood movie with great memories for me is the Sandlot.  Odd choice you may think, but the scene where they can play baseball during the night because the sky is lit with fireworks is amazing.  A simpler time.....I love it.  Plus when you are a child and you watch certain movies over and over and over, they are ingrained in your brain until they are part of you FOR - EV - VER!!!  It's a classic, you've got smores and all kinds of summer mischief.

Of course there is also the movie Independence Day... but that doesn't really make me feel that patriotic.  There are lots of great war movies, and the like.  Which remind you most of the Fourth of July and are nostalgic for you?

Heavenly Father are you there, when sometimes it is hard down here?
Well, just today I scraped my knee, lost my doll, was stung by a bee.
My sister yelled at me so mean, my brother hit me in my spleen.
Did you send me here to suffer? Hope my life does not get rougher!
My little brother took my toys, I took them back, he made a noise.
Then when my mommy said to share, I just sat there and didn't care.
So after all these troubled times, where can I turn for love sublime?
My mommy makes a great big fuss, when the toilet I do not flush.
Tonight for dinner was the worst, I ate some food I'm sure was cursed.
Is there any source of comfort, when my life takes much effort?
Well after all I feel gladder, when I do the things that matter.
Say my prayers and love my brother,  do all my chores for my mother.
Listen so good at F.H.E., be good for my fam'ly to see.
Try to listen, not be sassy, just like a good little lassie.
I feel love and peace increasing, when I do good without ceasing.
Feel the spirit deep within me, when I am just as I should be.
My teachers and my mom and dad, say these feelings are to be had,
As a sign to help give me sight, So I can know the wrong from right.
So, even though we may be small, the spirit helps us one and all!
Then no matter who, when or where, in your time of need he'll be there!

A Short Letter to Elaine: We Love You

Elaine,

It was 8 years ago today that I held you, while your mom and I said goodbye to you.

You left us the day before your 3rd birthday. We wanted so much for you to live so we could celebrate your 3rd birthday and many more birthdays with you.

You fought so valiantly in the hospital for 5 long weeks, struggling to stay alive with heart failure, waiting for a heart to come available for a transplant.

After a long valiant struggle your body was finally too tired and worn out. You were so brave and loving through it all. I held you there in a rocking chair as your mom held your hand. We kissed you and said goodbye then you took your last breath.

We miss you little sweetheart.

Love,
Your Mom and Dad

Lines, Lines and more lines.........

I think that 50% of our pictures from Disneyland were of us standing in line. It's what you do. It is expected, but not fun. You find interesting ways to keep your yougin's entertained. Here are a bunch of pictures of us in lines. Bonus points for the lucky winner who can name the rides the pics were taken at.

Disneyland (Day Three)

We got up early!!!!!! We took advantage of the early entry into the park. It was wonderful to have an uncrowded park. We got to explore tomorrow land and fantasy land a ton.

Myra even got to ride on Space Mountain!! My kids are short so we had lots of issues and disappointment in the "am I tall enough" department. That is a story for another time. Anyway, I went on Star Tours with Vi & Ashton. Ewwwwwwwwwwwww. I literally almost barfed all over. If you have motion sickness, this is not the ride for you. Ashton & Vi had a great time, I was green for 75% of the day because of it. Blech!!

Nemo was fun, Vaughn really liked it.
Fantasyland my kids loved, especially Myra.

There were princesses and villans and toys and just so much to take in!

Later in the day we got to watch a Christmas parade. It was fun, except when one of the floats broke down. Santa was stuck in front of us, but man, he was good. Kept the crowd busy and happy. The reindeer were great too. It was all so professional and well choreographed. Good times.

Storybook was one of Darin's favorite. I mean, they even put tiny little wreaths on the doors of the tiny cottages!! Wow. He also took a lot or pictures of the architecture.

We had decided that we were going to go back tot he hotel for a mandatory "nap". Everyone slept except for me and Ashton. He was content to play games on the itouch, but at least he was off his feet. We wanted to be able to stay up for the fireworks that night. The Christmas fireworks were over the Castle. The castle lit up at the end with different lights and was so amazing. i loved it. The kids enjoyed that they recognized several of the songs.

In the evening while we were waiting for the fireworks we checked out toon town. We went on the Roger Rabbit ride. The kids liked it but had never seen the movie....so it wasn't quite as fun for them.

Vaughn had a hard time staying up for the fireworks, but we managed to survive! It was a fun day.

Disneyland (Day Two)

Our very first day going to Disneyland...ever!!! It was so fun. The kids and especially Darin (he had worked all night on Thursday night, and stayed up Friday travelling and didn't sleep at all for like 40 hours) we exhausted so we didn't get quite the early start to the adventures as I thought. Plus the kids kept waking each other up all night. But we got into the park and it was Magical. All decorated for Christmas....wow. We tried going on Indiana but it kept breaking down. It was weird, but I guess Tom Sawyer's Island is now a Pirate Island. The kids loved that place and probably would have stayed all day if we hadn't pulled them away kicking and screaming. Here are some pictures on the island, and near there.

We went on Pirates (the kids LOVED that ride!) and wandered around a bit. Then headed over to California Adventure for a work lunch. There we got to meet Mickey and Minnie!! So much fun!
Ashton did not appreciate getting his picture taken with characters. :( After the wonderful lunch and festivities, we spent a lot of time in CA. We found Sully!!! That must be the most awkward and hot costume there is!

Lisa & Erik met up with us and showed us the ropes. We went to Bug's Life area and spent so long there. The kids enjoyed all the rides that were just right for them. It was fun that everything was "big" and I felt like a tiny little bug! :)

Bugs and more bugs!! We went on more rides once we left there. I think we for sure took the most pictures this first day!!

We found Jesse, Buzz walked by and we missed him. Next year, I will Stalk find Buzz to get a "family" picture!
Then we found these Humungo ice creams. They were wonderful!! The kids made fun messes, but look at those grins! The Ferris wheel was really large!! I felt like I could see all the way to Utah!

While we were eating, there was some Fineus and Ferb street dancing presentation. The kids loved it.....it was very Disney Chanel! I can't wait for Radiator springs to be finished! It looks so fun.

We went back to Disneyland and got stuck in a traffic jam of people. A Christmas concert had just finished and holy people batman. It took forever trying to get anywhere. Buzz lightyear ride was the last thing Vaughn was kinda ok with doing. Lisa and Erik stayed up for the fireworks. Our kids were wasted once it started getting dark. Vaughn was flipping out. We took the monorail back to the hotel (which was cool to see all around the park). We ordered Pizza for dinner and it was wonderful! Thank goodness for Domino's!
